May, 2016: Marcia has been reminding me that I should write down some of my personal stories. I started to do that a couple of years ago but was overtaken by circumstances. I realize if I don’t get started it will never happen though.

So here goes. These stories relate to a long conversation that I had with Marcia soon after we met (ask her for details). Hopefully, they will answer questions that otherwise you’d regret having never asked.

Update: I recently stumbled across a delightful phrase that captures my concept for this blog — Memoir mode noun  :: Writing an account of your personal experiences.

I’ve always liked going to new places, learning new ideas, and trying my hand at what I encounter. I need to know how things work, not just use them. That’s how I pursue existence. This became apparent a long time ago (but not to me). According to my parents, they discovered that’s how I relate to the world when I was very young.

Some of my pursuits: Building my own radios, learning to ride bicycles backward, flying model airplanes, learning the math and physics of electronics, scuba diving, backpacking in the wilderness, learning to play the guitar, sailboat racing, bicycle touring, and aerobatic flying. And maybe some pranks along the way.

Some of those pursuits started out as boyhood dreams. I’ve had the good fortune to pursue many of them. Serendipity played a big role in making it possible. I think there will be plenty of good stories for me to tell. No doubt I will digress from my list of stories when serendipity strikes again.

Curiosity drives a large part of how I relate to the world.

  1. I need to find out how things work, not just learn how to use them.
  2. Serendipity seems to play a major role in my following curiosity.

My way vs the highway normal way, an example:

“Google’s infamous man-on-the-street interviews demonstrated that many people have no idea what a Web browser is or even that they’re using one, but it did not demonstrate that they don’t know how to use a browser. Most people have no idea how a car works either, but they still manage to drive one.” ~ArsTechnica

Now it’s time for the first story.
